The Bates Mansion was designed by Art Director's Joseph Hurley and Robert Clathworthy in 1959 during pre-production on the original Psycho. Built on the backlot at Universal City Studios, the set cost a mere $15,000 which was still very high for that time. The facade has been known as "The Psycho House" since the Universal Studios Tour was created in 1964. The house was used in Psycho, Psycho II, Psycho III, and the NBC-TV pilot Bates Motel. It has also been featured in several movies and television shows during the last forty years. In 1988, plans for Psycho IV: The Beginning were announced. With Universal Studios Florida under construction, filmmakers moved their operation to Orlando and built a stunning re-creation of the house and motel. This section of the site features the most complete still gallery anywhere of Psycho House and Bates Motel images. If you have any you would like to include, e-mail them to us! |
